The Skincare Ritual That Finally Worked For Me (And It's Embarrassingly Simple)

I used to have seventeen skincare products on my bathroom shelf. Seventeen. And my skin was still breaking out, still dull, still doing that thing where it felt tight in some places and oily in others at the exact same time.

I thought more products meant more results. I was so wrong.

It started when I was traveling. I packed light that trip and only had room for three things: a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer with SPF, and a little tube of niacinamide serum I had tossed in as an afterthought. That was it. No toner, no essence, no vitamin C followed by retinol followed by a sleeping mask. Just three things.

By the end of the two week trip, a stranger asked me what I was using on my skin. . .

I stood there blinking because I genuinely did not know how to answer her. The honest answer was: very little, actually.

When I got home I did not go back to the shelf of seventeen. I kept the three things. And then I added one more: a weekly gentle exfoliant, because I do think exfoliation changes everything when your skin has been overwhelmed for years. So four things total. That is my whole routine now.

The cleanser does its job and leaves. The serum sinks in quietly. The moisturizer stays. The SPF protects everything I am trying to build.

What I noticed over the next few months was not some dramatic glow up. It was more subtle than that, and honestly more satisfying. My skin stopped reacting to everything. The random breakouts I had blamed on stress, on weather, on just being me. They slowed down. My skin got quieter. More like itself.

I think the thing nobody tells you about skincare is that most of the time, you are not solving a problem with more products. You are creating new ones. Layering too many actives. Disrupting your barrier without even knowing it. Confusing your skin until it does not know what to do with itself either.

. . .

Simplifying was not giving up. It was giving my skin a chance to actually breathe and do what it was trying to do all along.

Now when I travel, which is often, I do not stress about my skincare at all. Everything fits into a small pouch. Nothing leaks, nothing expires before I can use it, nothing makes me feel like I forgot something essential at home.

The routine that finally worked for me was the one that was easy enough to actually do every single day, no matter where I was in the world.

If you are drowning in products right now, I am not here to tell you what to use. But I will say this: try picking just the three things you actually love and see what happens when you let them do their job without the noise. You might be surprised what your skin was capable of all along.

. . . it might surprise you too.
