Last week, Samsung's Galaxy Glasses showed up where nobody expected them: buried inside a One UI 8.5 firmware update. Slim. Display-free. Ray-Ban style. A 12MP camera, Gemini AI, and Android XR baked in. They look exactly like normal sunglasses. And I've been thinking about them ever since, not because of what they can do, but because of everything the industry still has not figured out.
Samsung's Galaxy Glasses, expected to launch at Galaxy Unpacked in July 2026, could be the most important consumer wearable since AirPods. The global smart glasses market is growing at a CAGR of 17.5% and is expected to reach $24.88 billion in 2026. Android XR is positioning itself as the Android of spatial computing. Hardware partners including Samsung, Xreal, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster are all lining up devices. The ecosystem is forming fast. But here is what nobody is saying clearly enough: the hardware is ready. The UX is not.

Why This Moment Actually Matters
Samsung's Galaxy Glasses are not the first attempt at AI smart glasses. Google Glass launched in 2013 and became a cultural punchline within two years. Snapchat Spectacles had three failed hardware generations. Meta Ray-Ban glasses came much closer, but they're still more of a novelty than a daily tool for most people. So why should 2026 be different?
A few things have genuinely changed. The compute is now small enough to fit comfortably in a pair of frames. The AI is genuinely useful, not just gimmicky. And Android XR is finally solving the platform fragmentation problem that has killed every previous attempt at building an XR ecosystem at scale. When Google did this with Android for smartphones in 2008, it unlocked an entire market that no single company could have built alone. That is exactly what Android XR is trying to do for spatial computing right now.
The Samsung Galaxy Glasses, codenamed "Jinju," are display-free by design. A 12MP camera, touch controls, open-ear speakers, microphones, and photochromic lenses, all wrapped in something that looks like a pair of normal sunglasses. The true AR model, codenamed "Haean" with a micro-LED display, is a 2027 story. For now, Samsung is solving for daily wearability first. That is the right call. You can't ask people to wear a computer on their face if the computer looks and feels like one.
But wearability is only half the problem. The other half is interaction design. And that is where I think the industry is sleepwalking into a wall.
The Hardware Is the Easy Part. Seriously.
I work on product design every day, across 42+ products in 30+ industry verticals. One pattern I've seen consistently is that teams celebrate hardware milestones and then dramatically underinvest in the interaction layer. This is how you end up with products that work beautifully in demos and frustrate real people within a week.
Smart glasses are a fundamentally different interaction surface. Not a phone. Not a headset. Not a watch. They sit on your face, always on, always aware of your surroundings. The interaction model for this surface has not been solved. Right now we have gestures borrowed from phones, voice commands borrowed from smart speakers, and touch controls borrowed from earbuds. None of these were designed for a pair of glasses you wear from 7am to midnight.
I wrote about this earlier this year on Medium when covering AI-native experience design. The fundamental shift with AI-native products is that the interface is no longer a container for features. It becomes a layer of intelligence that should recede into the background and surface at exactly the right moment. Smart glasses are the most literal interpretation of this idea. And that makes the design problem much harder, not easier. When there's no screen to hide behind, every interaction decision becomes brutally visible.
Four UX Problems Nobody Is Talking About
Here is what concerns me most about the incoming smart glasses wave, and I want to be specific because the industry tends to wave these off as "things we'll figure out later":
- The glanceability paradox: Smart glasses are made for glanceable, ambient information. But most of the AI use cases people actually want, like summaries, search results, real-time translation, and turn-by-turn navigation, require sustained attention to absorb. You can't glance at a paragraph. Designers are going to have to build radically compressed information hierarchies that do not yet exist as conventions. Nobody has cracked what a "3-word AI response" looks like for a genuinely complex query.
- The ambient camera trust problem: Samsung's "Jinju" has a 12MP camera on the front of the frame. When you wear it, you are passively recording everything in your visual field. This is not just a privacy policy checkbox problem. It is an interaction design problem. How does the person you're talking to know what you're capturing? What visual signals communicate camera state? What does "camera paused" look like from the outside? The design community has not developed social conventions for this yet, and it will create real friction in workplaces, restaurants, and public spaces.
- Notification overload, now on your face: The average smartphone user receives 65 to 80 notifications per day. Smart glasses will surface these without you even reaching into your pocket. Without a strong AI-powered triage and filtering system baked into the interaction layer, people will be overwhelmed within days. The notification model that works on a glowing phone screen you can put face-down does not translate to an ambient always-on wearable that lives on your face.
- The "why did it do that" problem: AI-powered glasses will make proactive decisions. Surface context you didn't ask for. Take photos automatically. Make suggestions based on what you're looking at. When those decisions are wrong, and they will be, there is no clear feedback mechanism. On a phone you get a screen with context and a back button. On glasses with no display, the failure is invisible. Error state design for AI on ambient hardware is genuinely unsolved and nobody is shipping a good answer yet.
The companies that solve these four problems will own the smart glasses market. The ones that ship impressive hardware without solving them will end up in a drawer by month three, just like every smart glasses attempt before them.
What Android XR Gets Right (And Where It Falls Short)
Android XR's auto-spatialization feature is genuinely smart. It takes existing Android apps and automatically translates them into spatial experiences on the fly, which means the millions of apps already in the Google Play Store could theoretically work in mixed reality without developers rebuilding anything from scratch. For a platform that needs to scale fast, that kind of backwards compatibility is critical. You can't ask 10,000 developers to rebuild their apps for a device category that hasn't proven it can sell yet.
But here is what Android XR has not solved: the ambient display-free glasses use case. The platform was primarily designed around headsets with screens and visual displays. The display-free "Jinju" glasses sit in a weird in-between category where the OS conventions don't fully apply. How do you spatialize an app on a device with no screen? The honest answer is you don't. You need an entirely different interaction paradigm, and right now that paradigm doesn't exist within Android XR.
The Gemini AI integration gives me some real hope here. A conversational AI layer that understands your context and surfaces the right information at the right moment is exactly the kind of ambient intelligence that display-free glasses actually need. But Gemini still responds in a very "AI chatbot" mode. Text summaries. Conversational replies. Lists of options. Not quite the ultra-compressed, moment-aware ambient intelligence model that glasses without a screen actually require. The gap between "AI on a phone" and "AI on your face" is larger than most product teams realize right now.
What Designers Need to Do Before These Devices Ship
If you're a product designer or founder planning to build for the Android XR ecosystem, here is where I'd be investing time right now, before July, before the hardware is even in anyone's hands:
Design for the 1 to 3 second glance. Everything your glasses surface should be fully digestible in under three seconds. This is a completely different content design challenge than anything we have solved on mobile or desktop. It means building information hierarchies that are radically compressed and prioritized by context, not by what the app thinks is most important.
Build trust signals into the core interaction model. People need to know when the camera is active, when AI is listening, and when data is being processed. These aren't just ethical requirements. They are core UX requirements that will determine whether people actually wear these things outside their home. Design the camera state indicator before you design any feature that uses the camera.
Rethink the notification model from scratch. The phone notification paradigm will not work here. Glasses need to be selective by default, with aggressive AI filtering that learns what actually matters to each user. The goal should be that users are pleasantly surprised by how quiet the glasses are. Not overwhelmed by the same flood that already exhausts them on their phones.

The technology can already do more than users can comfortably experience in one sitting. Smart glasses are the next frontier where that gap will play out in public, quite literally on people's faces. That raises the stakes considerably.
The Bottom Line
Samsung Galaxy Glasses launching at Unpacked in July 2026 will be a significant hardware moment. Android XR expanding to multiple OEMs across 2026 will be a meaningful platform moment. But the real product design moment, the moment when someone figures out the daily interaction model for ambient AI on your face, that one has not happened yet. And it won't happen by accident.
Only 5% of U.S. adults currently plan to buy smart glasses in the next twelve months. And 56% cite cost as the primary barrier. But talk to users who bought previous generations of smart glasses and you'll find a third, quieter reason that doesn't show up in surveys: they just didn't know what to do with them after day three. That is a UX failure. And no amount of Gemini AI integration or Android XR platform announcements will fix it without serious, intentional interaction design work happening right now.
The best hardware products have always understood that the device is not the product. The experience is the product. Apple understood this with the original Mac. With the iPhone. With AirPods. The question for the next six months is whether Samsung and Google understand it deeply enough to get the Galaxy Glasses experience right, not just the Galaxy Glasses hardware.
I'm genuinely excited about where this is heading. But I'm watching closely.
