Generative UI Is Here: Why the Interface You're Designing Today Might Be the Last One You Hardcode

Generative UI is the biggest shift in product design since the smartphone. Instead of designers building static screens that users click through, the interface is now assembled in real time by an AI based on the user's intent, context, and history. Gartner predicts 30% of all new applications will use AI-driven adaptive interfaces by 2026, up from under 5% just two years ago. This article breaks down what Generative UI actually is, why it's coming faster than most product teams realize, and what it means for the way designers work.



I want to start with something that happened on a project I was working on a few months back. We had spent three weeks designing a multi-step onboarding flow. Twelve screens, careful microcopy, a lot of thinking about what the user needed to know before they could get to value. We were proud of it.



Then someone on the engineering team asked a quiet question: "What if we just told the AI the goal and let it figure out what to show?" We built a quick prototype. The AI assembled the right screens in the right order based on what the user told it they were trying to do. Three weeks of design work, compressed into a prompt and a runtime.



That's Generative UI. And it's not a future thing anymore. It's here.



What Generative UI Actually Means

The textbook definition from Nielsen Norman Group describes Generative UI as a pattern where parts of the user interface are generated, selected, or controlled by an AI agent at runtime, rather than being fully predefined by developers. But I think that misses the point a little. The real shift isn't technical. It's philosophical.



We've spent thirty years designing products as a series of fixed screens. You click here, you see this. You fill in that form, you get to the next step. The designer's job was to anticipate every state, every edge case, every possible user path, and account for all of it in a static set of layouts.



Generative UI breaks that model entirely. Instead of a fixed set of screens, you design a system of rules and components. The AI evaluates the user's intent in real time and assembles the most relevant interface from those pieces. The user never sees a screen you designed specifically for them. They see a screen that was built for them, in the moment, by a machine.

This isn't science fiction. Google Research published a detailed paper on this. CopilotKit has a full developer guide for building GenUI in 2026. Vercel has built tooling around it. The infrastructure is already there.



The Numbers Are Harder to Ignore Than the Concept

I get it. "AI-generated UI" sounds like a think piece topic, not something you'd actually ship. But the statistics are moving faster than the conversation about them.



Gartner's prediction of 30% adoption by 2026 is significant on its own. But what's more telling is the trajectory. From under 5% to 30% in two years is not gradual adoption. That's a category moment. That's the kind of growth curve you see when something stops being experimental and starts becoming expected.



And the business case is clear. Companies that excel at AI-driven personalization, which is what GenUI enables at the interface level, generate 40% more revenue than companies that don't. When the interface adapts to what the user actually wants to do right now, friction drops. Completion rates go up. Support tickets go down.

I've been testing Figma Make with my team, and the speed gains are real. The research points to 40 to 60% faster shipping times for teams using generative design tools. That's not a small productivity bump. That's a structural change in how product work happens.



What This Means for How Designers Work

Here's the part that makes some of my designer friends uncomfortable. If the AI assembles the UI at runtime, what exactly is the designer doing?



The honest answer: your job gets harder and more interesting at the same time.



You're no longer designing screens. You're designing the system that generates screens. That means:

  • Component design becomes the core deliverable. Every component in your design system needs to work as a standalone, composable unit. The AI needs to be able to pull any piece into any context and have it still make sense. Messy, context-dependent components break in a GenUI system fast.
  • Design tokens and rules matter more than layouts. The AI doesn't read your Figma frames. It reads your rules. What's the spacing relationship between elements? What's the visual hierarchy logic? What constraints define this brand? You need to codify all of this in a way a model can reason about.
  • You're now doing intent modeling. Understanding what users are trying to accomplish in a given moment, not just what they clicked on, becomes the core design research question. You're mapping goals, not flows.
  • Testing changes completely. You can't test a GenUI product by walking through a prototype. You test it by giving it a range of user intents and evaluating whether the assembled interfaces are appropriate, legible, and brand-consistent. That requires a different kind of QA mindset.
  • Trust and transparency become design problems. Users need to understand why the interface looks different today than it did yesterday. Designers need to think about how to signal that the UI is adaptive without making users feel like the product is unstable or inconsistent.


The Machine Experience Layer

The most underappreciated design challenge in 2026 is that we're now building interfaces for two different audiences simultaneously: humans who use the product, and machines that read, interpret, and interact with it on their behalf.



This is what some researchers are calling Machine Experience (MX) design. The idea is that an AI agent doesn't browse your UI the way a human does. It doesn't notice the polished hover state you spent two hours getting right. It looks for structured data, clear affordances, predictable patterns. It needs to be able to understand what your product does and what actions are available, even when it's operating autonomously.



Products built only for human users will increasingly struggle as AI agents become the primary interaction layer. A survey from Designlab's 2026 State of AI in UX report found that 73% of designers say AI as a design collaborator will have the most impact this year. But the flip side of that is that products themselves need to be designed to collaborate with AI, not just designed by it.



I've started adding what I call an "agent layer" to my design specs. It documents what actions an AI agent should be able to perform in a given flow, what data it needs access to, and what decisions it should bring back to the human rather than make on its own. This isn't extra work. It's table stakes for any product that will have AI users in 2026 and beyond.



Where GenUI Is Already Being Shipped

This isn't theoretical. There are live products doing this right now, and the patterns are instructive for anyone thinking about how to bring this into their own work.



In e-commerce, GenUI replaces static filter menus with interfaces that adapt in real time to what the shopper is actually looking for, surfacing relevant products with less friction. In travel booking, it generates brand-consistent experiences that adapt to traveler intent, preferences, and timing, without requiring a designer to build a separate flow for every combination of inputs. In financial services, it compresses long multi-step tasks into a single adaptive screen, reducing friction while maintaining the clarity and trust that regulated industries demand.



Each of those examples describes a product where the designer's core job shifted from "build the flow" to "define the components, constraints, and rules that make any flow work." That's a meaningful change in what the job is.



What I'm Doing Differently Right Now

I've been writing about this transition on my reloadux blog and Medium for a few months now. The thing I keep coming back to is this: the designers who will do well in the GenUI era are the ones who are comfortable thinking in systems rather than screens.



Practically, that means a few things I've started building into my workflow. I'm auditing every component in my design systems for composability. Can this element exist independently? Does it carry enough context to be dropped into a generated layout? I'm writing design specs that include behavioral rules, not just visual specs. And I'm building test suites for AI-generated layouts the same way engineers write unit tests for code.



It's more work upfront. But the products that come out the other side are faster to ship, more responsive to actual user intent, and genuinely better experiences for the people using them.



The interface you're designing today might genuinely be the last generation of hard-coded screens. That's not a reason to panic. It's a reason to get ahead of the shift while most of your peers are still catching up.
